Flute playing is a journey
But who says you can't also enjoy the ride?
DiazFlute Winter Recital
So what are private lessons like?
This moment is all about YOU!

Whether you are interested in playing the flute in college, simply want to get a little bit better or starting out for the first time, our lessons are designed to help you excel with ALL of your goals (even if they aren’t music related)!

Right now, your attention is being pulled in so many different directions between school, your friends, your responsibilities, and thinking about your future. When was the last time you paused and took a deep breath? When was the last time you did something for yourself?
Well, these lessons are it. This is where private lessons meet personal growth.
This is your time.

Taking flute lessons with me is about becoming your own best teacher. When we encounter something difficult or challenging in our life, often our instinct is to walk (or run) in the other direction. But in flute lessons, we accept the challenge head on. Through reflection and perseverance, we rise to the challenge. The goal is to reflect upon your own growth and understand how it happened.
Anna, student parent
"Ms. Diaz is kind, friendly, and patient with my daughter. Her instruction has filled the gap of learning due to virtual school last year. She has vast musical experience, is an excellent teacher, and adapts her lessons to my daughters strengths and weaknesses. The highlight for me is hearing my daughter play her flute more confidently! Thank you Ms. Diaz!"

Jazlyn, student, 8th grade
"Anamarie gives great flute lessons! She is a very good flute teacher and she is very good at playing the flute. She is very very nice, and she is always interested to learn about things that I like other than playing flute. I play volleyball and she is always interested about if I win my games or not. I think it makes her a great teacher since she is always interested in learning things about me. She finds lots of fun songs to play during lessons and she is very encouraging! She helps to make me realize that making mistakes while playing the flute is okay. I am always excited for my lessons because I know that they will be fun. Anamarie is a great teacher!"

-
Lessons are once a week and are either 45 minutes for elementary and middle schoolers, or 60 minutes for middle and high schoolers.
-
Students are encouraged to develop a strong sense of self reflection and individual responsibility by thinking critically about how they are playing. I often ask questions like:
-
How would you describe your tone?
-
Do you like what your tone sounded like?
-
What did you do to achieve the tone you liked?
-
Why do you think that note cracked?
-
What do you think is the cause of that finger stumble?
-
-
Beyond their weekly private lesson students have the opportunity perform in 2 studio recitals, participate in yearly mock audition, take part in studio challenges, and perform in the studio flute choir. Our fluteless activies include the end of the year party and celebrations for achieving playing milestones
-
Another fluteless activity, students can participate in the studio holiday party and end of the school year party, as well as our twice a year trip to see the Richmond Symphony.
-
Lesson cost is discussed during the trial lesson. Financial assistance is available and information can be provided after the trial lesson.
DiazFlute Studio Philosophy
I believe that dedication, reflection, and perseverance can allow for achievement and growth beyond one’s intentions. My career to becoming a professional flutist has been filled with twists and turns. After coming back to playing after quitting for a year and half in college, I reframed my approach to playing the flute. While it wasn’t an overnight switch, I became less concerned about being perfect and instead focused on improvement. With this change came a sense of dedication to the craft and an unwavering perseverance for growth. The outcome was achieving goals and milestones in my playing that I never thought were possible.
At DiazFlute Studio, I encourage students to develop a strong sense of self reflection and individual responsibility, and I push students to take control of their own learning during lessons. I believe strongly in “being your own best teacher” rather than myself stating what is right or wrong. I often ask questions like:
-
How would you describe your tone?
-
Do you like what your tone sounded like?
-
What did you do to achieve the tone you liked?
-
Why do you think that note cracked?
-
What do you think is the cause of that finger stumble?
By asking these questions, students take an active role in their learning, understand how to achieve their desired playing wants, and learn much quicker. My goal is to guide rather than tell. This approach not only applies to becoming a better flutist and musician, but extends to all other aspects of their life and schooling. I encourage older high school students to be in charge of their lesson schedule and communicate with me for any lesson reschedules or conflicts. I often find when students take control of their own learning whether it be with flute in hand or scheduling, personal growth happens on all levels.
While a private lesson each week is important for musical growth, there are other opportunities at DiazFlute Studio for students to develop other skills. This includes:
-
2 yearly studio recitals (winter and spring)
-
Opportunity for public speaking development
-
Mock auditions for District Band Auditions
-
Studio challenges with prizes
-
End of the year party
-
Studio celebrations for achievements
-
Opportunity to perform in studio flute choir
I expect students to take an active role in their music education, simply showing up and hoping to be told what to do is not enough. Students will be challenged to think critically and try things that may be difficult on the flute (but always with praise and encouragement from me). It is expected that students practice each week to prepare for their upcoming lessons. If not much practicing has been done, I expect students to take responsibility so we can best adjust how the lesson flows. By meeting these expectations, students will not only see great improvement in their playing but develop individual responsibility for all other actions in their life and schooling.
