Flute playing is a journey.
But who says you can't also enjoy the ride?

(hint: you absolutely can enjoy the ride!)

So what are private lessons like?

This moment is all about YOU!

Whether you are interested in playing the flute in college, simply want to get a little bit better or starting out for the first time, our lessons are designed to help you excel with ALL of your goals (even if they aren’t music related)!

Right now, your attention is being pulled in so many different directions between school, your friends, your responsibilities, and thinking about your future. When was the last time you paused and took a deep breath? When was the last time you did something for yourself?

Well, these lessons are it. This is where private lessons meet personal growth.

This is your time.

Taking flute lessons with me is about finding the inner peace and learning how to become more mindful in everything you do. We do this through the vessel of learning to play the flute. The goal is not to be a perfect player. The goal is to see your progress and understand how it happened.

"Ms. Diaz is kind, friendly, and patient with my daughter. Her instruction has filled the gap of learning due to virtual school last year. She has vast musical experience, is an excellent teacher, and adapts her lessons to my daughters strengths and weaknesses. The highlight for me is hearing my daughter play her flute more confidently! Thank you Ms. Diaz!"
Anna, student parent

By taking private lessons with me, you will:

  • Develop an understanding of the fundamentals required for playing the flute

    • Learn how to produce a beautiful tone, have fantastic finger technique, and establish your own musicality

  • Plant the seeds for mindfulness and reflection

    • This is something that can be applied to all aspects of your life, not just music!

  • Develop and practice self-kindness

    • Nobody has time for self-rudeness, but we do it to ourselves anyways! Let’s learn how to quiet that rude voice in our heads.

  • Challenge yourself to grow musically and non-musically

    • Have you ever had an idea for something or a goal but decided against it because of this or that? Well now is the time to dig that idea or goal back out! Nothing is too big or too small!

  • Establish a community of supportive friends

    • Who doesn’t love making new friends?!

If any of those things sound like something you want to do, THEN YOU’RE IN THE RIGHT PLACE!

I’m not going to lie, do you have to put in the work? Yes. But this is work for YOU. This work will not only make you a better flute player, it will help you achieve more than you ever thought you could!

"Anamarie gives great flute lessons! She is a very good flute teacher and she is very good at playing the flute. She is very very nice, and she is always interested to learn about things that I like other than playing flute. I play volleyball and she is always interested about if I win my games or not. I think it makes her a great teacher since she is always interested in learning things about me. She finds lots of fun songs to play during lessons and she is very encouraging! She helps to make me realize that making mistakes while playing the flute is okay. I am always excited for my lessons because I know that they will be fun. Anamarie is a great teacher!"

Can I get a little more info about the details?

Lesson Details

Absolutely!

  • Lessons are once a week and are either 45 minutes or 60 minutes in length. Whatever works best for you.

  • Lessons are geared to what the students want to learn. This could be a stronger focus on history and theory (the principles of all music), the type of music they would like to learn (pop, jazz, rock), composing their own music, or finding ways to bring their other interests into music (I strongly encourage the development of fluteless passions as well!).

  • At the core of every lesson is the students' short-term and long-term goals. These goals could be music or non-music related and will be reflected upon once a month.

  • A big part of our lessons are the weekly reflection sheet. This is where the growth happens! This fluteless assignment is meant for students to reflect, think critically and be mindful about their practice sessions: if you were tense or in a bad mood while practicing, how did that affect your session? How is this goal coming along? How did you work through that technical passage? How did you smooth out your tone on this other section? This allows students to see progress that may not be obvious.

  • Students have the opportunity to perform in 2 studio recitals a year; a winter recital and spring recital. Students also have the opportunity to play in the studio flute choir.

  • Another fluteless activity, students can participate in the studio holiday party and end of the school year party, as well as our twice a year trip to see the Richmond Symphony.

  • Lesson cost is discussed during the trial lesson. Financial assistance is available and information can be provided after the trial lesson.

"I've been studying with Anamarie for several months now and have been very happy with her instruction and my progress. She is able to rapidly and accurately identify issues with my playing and offer (often multiple) clear suggestions for improvement. I appreciate her supportive style, clear communication, and high degree of investment in students' progress. I also arrive for my weekly lessons as she is finishing up with an earlier student and am always impressed at how seamlessly she transitions from teaching one so young to working wtih an adult student."
Joe, adult student

Teaching Philosophy

DiazFlute Studio

I believe that a positive change of mindset and expansion of thinking can benefit many aspects of one’s life. We are taught skills such as creativity, perseverance, and patience at a young age, but the development of these skills are usually very surface level. As a musician, these words are ingrained in our heads as the keys to success, but no one ever really tells you how to become more creative, have motivated perseverance, or practice true patience. It has taken me many years of studying the flute to understand the true development of these skills. My secret? Mindfulness, reflection, and self-kindness. When this light bulb went off in my head, every aspect of my life changed for the better.  That is why mindfulness, reflection, and self-kindness are the guiding principles that are taught in my studio. Through this, students understand how to capture their creativity, be determined with their perseverance, and accept being patient, which allows them to be successful in all aspects of their life.

One of the most important parts of my teaching is to understand what works for each individual student, not a cookie cutter education. This could be as simple as focusing on non-standard repertoire for a student (hello, Lizzo) or taking a completely different approach to how tone and technique is traditionally taught. The way one student learns may not be the way another student learns and it is my responsibility to adapt my teaching in a so that each student is set up for success.

Lessons are geared to what the students want to learn. This could be a stronger focus on history and theory (the principles of all music), the type of music they would like to learn (pop, jazz, rock), composing their own music, or finding ways to bring their other interests into music (I strongly encourage the development of fluteless passions as well!). At the core of every lesson is the students' short-term and long-term goals. These goals could be music or non-music related and will be reflected upon once a month. By visiting them monthly, students have opportunities to be reminded of what they are working towards and adapt them as necessary. It’s important to remember that goals are allowed to change and morph as time progresses.

Students will complete weekly practice reflections that will be turned into me at the beginning of their lesson. This fluteless assignment is meant for students to reflect, think critically and be mindful about their practice sessions: if you were tense or in a bad mood while practicing, how did that affect your session? How is this goal coming along? How did you work through that technical passage? How did you smooth out your tone on this other section? This allows students to see progress that may not be obvious, help students understand what works for them, and is essential for growth :).

The culmination of all the students' hard work are their performance opportunities. Students will participate in three studio recitals a year; a winter recital, spring recital, and back to school recital. Students also have the opportunity to play in the studio flute choir, One Breath Flute Choir. As another fluteless activity, students can participate in the studio holiday and end of the school party, as well as our twice a year trip to see the Richmond Symphony.

I expect students to put forth mindful effort into their practice sessions and lesson preparation, practice self-kindness throughout their practicing, and take the time to reflect upon the work they are doing. During those “off” weeks when school and life get stressful, students are encouraged to be honest when lesson material is not fully prepared. It is OK, I get it! Students should come with an alternative lesson plan that may not consist of flute playing but continues to work towards their goals.

By taking lessons with me, you will:

  • Develop an understanding of the fundamentals required for playing the flute

  • Plant the seeds for mindfulness and reflection

  • Develop and practice self-kindness

  • Challenge yourself to grow musically and non-musically

  • Establish a community of supportive friends
